Kate Spade, Anthony Bourdain: It’s Time We Bring Mental Health to the Forefront
This blog is inspired by the recent events surrounding Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain. Suicide and mental health is a major topic in our world today, and needs to be covered by our media just as much as the DOW & Trump News. I know too many people.
Here is my friend’s story:
Kate Spade, now Anthony Bourdain. Why all this suffering, why all this pain?
A tide of media coverage is about to sweep across America tonight. I find it surprising a major societal issue is finally being brought into limelight. The topic of depression has undergone years of suppression, and I’m tired of seeing people still fighting progression.
It’s time to bring mental health to the forefront, so this blog will confront all the issues about it…I’ll be blunt.
I’ve had bouts of depression, I’ve had voices of pure evil, I’ve had thoughts of darkness, it runs through all people. Sure, I will tell my story, but I figured at first, I’ll tell the tale of the man I’ve known since birth.
Suicide is terrible, it’s absolute Hell, it’s an ending for those dealing with the demons that fell, as well as the passage way of pain for those left with your shell. Is it shallow, is it cowardess, is it brave, is it stupid? Are you thinking more of yourself vs. your son – are you clueless? See, I’ve seen the pain from the eyes of the left-behind, I’ve seen the cries in the eyes of the once defined. The ones that were sure their dad wouldn’t dare do that, the ones that were sure their hero would come right back. The ones that believed they were a reason to fight & live, the ones who were abandoned and were like “Shit…
“Why’d you do that daddy? Why’d you never call out for help? I’d have helped ya daddy, I’m young but I can still weld. I’ll weld your heart back; I can piece it together. You saw me building with Legos, we watched Heath Ledger together. Batman was our favorite, the day we went to the theaters, said it was so sad when that gun rang out – Tweeters…quoted quotes of quoters about mental health and voters, if you know of someone, please shout out before you find a rope around their throat and, Why’d you not ask your son? Why’d you leave him all alone? I know you hated momma, but man I was your bro. Now that I am older, I’m blessed I was your son. See, I understand the pain you went through, I just wish you dropped the gun.”
The man who gave me these quotes was so broken and so bruised, because the years of abandonment were equivalent to abuse. Listen, I know that suicide is all about taking your own life, and in your eye it seems that your life isn’t worth life. But, please understand that the bullet or the rope, or the knife up to your throat, impacts not just yourself…but it’s falling dominos to those around you, So…
Please dad, put down that gun, you have your life to live for. Please dad, think of the good, you’re rich in my eyes, not poor. Please dad, don’t do this, I’m trying not to cry, please…
What if I said this man was my father
And that little boy was me?
Never be too proud to reach out and ask for a hand. Mental illness feels like a maze with no exit, but I promise there is an end in sight.
